What We Do

We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Besides our volunteer activities, our monthly meetings showcase a presentation on a variety of topics including American history, genealogy, women’s issues, conservation, historic preservation, and continuing education. Many examples of our activities are listed below.

Promoting Patriotism

  • Support active military and their families with gift cards, coupons, and greeting cards
  • Recognize Vietnam Veterans’ service with a commemorative pin and certificate
  • Support our veterans by recognizing the service of Vietnam vets
  • Participate in the Triad Honor Flight
  • Provide fidget blankets and supply of toiletries and clothing to the local veterans hospital
  • Observe Veterans Day annually
  • Support Wreaths Across America and participate in wreath laying ceremonies
  • Honor our first responders in the annual Day of Giving
  • Participate in Constitution Week activities
  • Participate in America 250! Committee activities to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary
  • Create a Patriot tree hosted by our local library with ornaments of our Patriot ancestors
  • Include our families in our activities

Historic Preservation

  • Applied for grave markers and held grave marking ceremonies for two of our chapter Patriots
  • Support the preservation of NSDAR buildings
  • Participate in the Patriot Records Project
  • Digitize and index historical documents
  • Conduct historical research for local universities
  • Participate in local historic programs, tours, and events
  • Volunteer at the local Family History Center
  • Apply for grants to mark or maintain historic sites

Celebrating Constitution Week in style.

Education

  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children by donating needed supplies, providing gifts for special occasions, and putting on holiday parties and dinners
  • Sponsor DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for seniors in local high schools
  • Sponsor American History Essay Contests for students in grades five to eight
  • Distribute Constitution Week educational materials to elementary schools throughout the area
  • Perform a Constitution Week program in five elementary schools with local officials in attendance
  • Participate in Bells Across America on September 17 to honor the signing of the U. S. Constitution
  • Sponsor Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Awards to cadets in local high schools and colleges
  • Participate in the American history book club
  • Donate to local literacy programs (Read Write Spell and Bookmarks) to provide books to children

Our chapter’s presentation of the 2022 DAR Good Citizens Award was enjoyed by in-person and virtual attendees.
